Steel Lever
My KAWASAKI 636 has a spongy feel to the front brake lever even after installing steel brake lines. Plse help!
The bike only has 1,500 miles on it and the new steel braided brake lines were professionally installed!
You didn't mention if this was initially or after continual use over a long day/race - I will assume this is initially and whenever depressed.
There are still 3 things which may be causing this even after the SS lines:
1) Brake Pads. The pads you have especially if they are OEM, contribute greatly to how the lever and brakes work. A more organic pad will have softer 'bite' in the begining and tend to have a more progressive feel. Meaning the harder you press, the more you stop. A metal sintered pad , once heated up properly, have strong 'bite' in the beginning and have a more linear feel. The OEM pads on the 636 are prob. and organo-metallic mix. If you want more bite...switch to metal sintered pads. Be warned though..they take a while to heat up and are fairly useless in wet conditions.
2) Air in Lines/Brake Fluid - Probably need to rebleed them. If you are ONLY experiencing 'sponginess' after a long day or hot track session, then it's definitely the brake fluid. Use higher grade DOT 3 or 4 Brake fluid which can withstand greater temp.
3) The Master Cylinder/Lever Setup - If number 1 or 2 above doesn't work, then you may just need a better Master Cylinder. I've heard good things about the radial brake Master Cylinder on Kawi's....I believe it's Nissin. But the best out there is a Brembo system from Pads all the way up to Lever....$$$$$$$$
