Bathroom tile?
I rent and the house we moved into wasnt in very good shape. I'm trying to make the bathroom look better. I dont know much about grout and the exisitng grout around the toilet and tiles in the tub is very nasty. I have tryed cleaning it several times, but my cleaner isnt getting it to the point where it is white. I really want it to be white and clean so instead of spending hours scrubbing I was wondering if anyone knew if it would be ok to just grout over it? I dont want to mess anything up...thanks!
Do I have to get permission from the landlord beforehand?
You really don't want to put new grout over old. It will not adhere properly and will come off in chunks. If you want to do it right, I suggest you use the time you would have invested in scrubbing, into removing the old grout and then replacing it with all new. You will be much happier with the results!
The perk to this is, most landlords are incredibly happy when a tenant uses their own time and resources to better the property they are renting. It saves them from having to send out a service/maintenance tech and spending their own money! I did almost all of my own repairs in the home I used to rent. I would would just save all receipts and figure out a fair amount for the labor I put into the work, and my landlord would just take the amount off of my rent.
If you're feeling ify about doing the grout work yourself, go to Lowes or Home depot. They offer free classes in all sorts of home repairs and renovations. That's what I did!
